Why Most Students Struggle with IELTS Reading
The IELTS Reading test gives you 60 minutes to answer 40 questions across 3 passages. That is just 1.5 minutes per question — and the passages get progressively harder. Many students run out of time on the third passage, losing easy marks.
Here are 10 strategies that top scorers use consistently:
1. Don't Read the Entire Passage First
This is the biggest time-waster. Instead, read the questions first, then scan the passage for answers. You only need to understand the parts that answer specific questions — not every sentence.
2. Master Skimming and Scanning
Skimming means reading quickly to get the general idea (read first and last sentences of each paragraph). Scanning means searching for specific words, names, numbers, or dates. Practice both daily.
3. Underline Keywords in Questions
Before looking at the passage, underline the key words in each question. These are the words you will scan for. Look for names, dates, technical terms, and unique nouns — not common words like "the" or "important."
4. Watch Out for Paraphrasing
IELTS almost never uses the exact same words as the passage. "Elderly people" might become "senior citizens" or "older adults" in the questions. Train yourself to recognise synonyms and paraphrases — this is the single most tested skill.
5. TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN — Know the Difference
TRUE: The passage clearly confirms the statement. FALSE: The passage clearly contradicts the statement. NOT GIVEN: The passage does not mention this information at all. The most common mistake is confusing FALSE with NOT GIVEN.
6. Manage Your Time Strictly
Spend no more than 20 minutes per passage. If you are stuck on a question for more than 2 minutes, make your best guess and move on. You can always come back at the end.
7. Read the Instructions Carefully
"Choose NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS" means exactly that — if you write three words, it is marked wrong even if the content is correct. Pay attention to word limits.
8. Answers Follow Passage Order
For most question types (fill-in-the-blank, TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVEN, sentence completion), the answers appear in the same order as the passage. Use this to narrow down where to look.
9. Practice with a Timer Every Day
Reading without a timer is not real practice. Set a 20-minute timer for each passage and stick to it. Speed comes from practice, not from reading faster.
10. Review Your Mistakes
After every practice test, go back and read the explanations for questions you got wrong. Understanding WHY you made a mistake is more valuable than doing 10 more tests without reflection.
Final Thought
Band 7 in Reading requires getting 30-32 out of 40 correct. That means you can afford to get 8-10 wrong. Focus on accuracy for the questions you attempt rather than rushing through all of them.
