Why Students Lose Marks in Listening
The IELTS Listening test is often considered the easiest section, yet the average score worldwide is only Band 6.0. Why? Because most mistakes are not about understanding — they are about carelessness.
Mistake 1: Misspelling Answers
If the answer is "Wednesday" and you write "Wendsday," it is wrong. Spelling counts in Listening. Practice spelling common words: days, months, countries, and everyday nouns.
Mistake 2: Missing Plurals
"Books" and "book" are different answers. Listen carefully for the 's' at the end of words. If the speaker says "three books," writing "book" is incorrect.
Mistake 3: Writing Too Many Words
If the instruction says "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS," do not write three. "Next Monday" is correct. "On next Monday" is wrong — even though it is grammatically better.
Mistake 4: Not Reading Ahead
You get 30 seconds before each section to read the questions. USE this time. Read the questions, underline key words, and predict what kind of answer you need (a name? a number? a place?).
Mistake 5: Losing Concentration
The audio plays ONCE. If you lose focus for 10 seconds, you might miss 2-3 answers. Train your concentration by listening to English audio for 30+ minutes without pausing.
Mistake 6: Ignoring Distractors
IELTS Listening deliberately gives wrong information before correcting it. "The meeting is at 2pm... actually, sorry, it has been moved to 3pm." The answer is 3pm — but many students write 2pm because they heard it first.
Mistake 7: Not Checking Answers During Transfer Time
You get 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers. Use the first 2-3 minutes to CHECK your answers — look for spelling mistakes, missing words, and answers that do not make grammatical sense.
Mistake 8: Not Practising with Different Accents
IELTS uses British, Australian, American, and Canadian accents. If you only practise with American English, a British accent might confuse you. Listen to BBC, Australian news, and Canadian podcasts.
