The Part 2 Challenge
In IELTS Speaking Part 2, you receive a cue card with a topic and must speak for 1-2 minutes. You get 1 minute to prepare. Most students either run out of things to say after 30 seconds, or they ramble without structure.
Here is a framework that works for ANY topic:
The W-H Framework
Use the 1-minute preparation time to write down notes using these prompts:
- What — What is it? Describe it clearly.
- When/Where — When and where did it happen?
- Who — Who was involved?
- Why — Why is it important/memorable/special?
- How — How did you feel? How did it affect you?
Example: "Describe a book you enjoyed reading"
What: I would like to talk about "Atomic Habits" by James Clear.
When/Where: I read it about six months ago, during my summer holiday. I was at home and had quite a lot of free time.
Who: My friend recommended it to me after she noticed I was struggling with time management.
Why: What I found most valuable was the idea that small daily improvements add up to remarkable results over time.
How: After reading it, I started building better study habits, and it genuinely changed how I approach my IELTS preparation.
Tips for Fluency
- Do not memorise scripts — examiners can tell immediately and your score drops
- Use fillers naturally: "Well," "Actually," "To be honest," "What I mean is..."
- Extend your answers with reasons: "I enjoyed it because..." "The reason I remember it is..."
- If you forget a word, describe it: "It is like a... you know, the thing you use to..."
- Practice with a timer — record yourself and aim for at least 1.5 minutes
