The Secret to a High-Scoring IELTS Essay
Many students lose marks in Writing Task 2 not because of bad ideas, but because of poor organisation. IELTS examiners use four criteria to score your essay, and Coherence and Cohesion (how well your essay is organised) accounts for 25% of your score.
Here is the structure that consistently produces Band 7-8 essays:
The 4-Paragraph Structure
Paragraph 1: Introduction (2-3 sentences)
Paraphrase the question in your own words, then state your position clearly. Do NOT copy the question word-for-word — examiners penalise this.
Example: "It is often argued that university education should be free for all citizens. While there are valid reasons to support this view, I believe that a combination of government funding and modest tuition fees is the most practical approach."
Paragraph 2: Body Paragraph 1 (5-7 sentences)
Present your main argument with a clear topic sentence, explanation, and a specific example. Use this formula:
- Topic sentence: State the main idea
- Explain: Why is this true?
- Example: Give a specific, real-world example
- Link back: Connect to the question
Paragraph 3: Body Paragraph 2 (5-7 sentences)
Present your second argument OR discuss the opposing view (depending on the question type). Use the same formula as Paragraph 2.
Paragraph 4: Conclusion (2-3 sentences)
Summarise your position — do NOT introduce new ideas. Restate your opinion in different words from the introduction.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Writing fewer than 250 words (automatic penalty)
- Not answering ALL parts of the question
- Using memorised phrases that do not fit the topic
- Writing 5-6 short paragraphs instead of 4 developed ones
- Spending too long on Task 1 (spend only 20 minutes) and rushing Task 2
Time Management
You have 40 minutes for Task 2. Spend 5 minutes planning, 30 minutes writing, and 5 minutes checking. A well-planned essay is always better than a longer, disorganised one.
